The Incas considered quinoa “the mother grain,” because of its high nutritional value. If you own a parrot, you might have seen this ingredient when searching for new recipes for your pet birds. Perhaps you’re never heard of it before. Quinoa (pronounced “keen-wah”) is amazing from a nutritional standpoint. High in complete proteins and fiber, and low in salt, quinoa packs a dietary wallop when consumed. Containing higher levels of iron than many other grains, as well as high levels of potassium, riboflavin, magnesium, it has an almost perfect balance of all eight essential amino acids. It is gluten-free and contains almost double the amount of calcium as many other grains. One cup of cooked quinoa has the approximate calcium content of a quart of milk. Many pet birds find its light, fluffy texture when cooked as appealing as its nutty taste. Quinoa has an outer coating called saponin, a bitter, soapy-tasting outer coating believed to protect the grain from being eaten by pet birds and insects. Most commercially available quinoa has been processed to remove the saponin before packaging, but a thorough rinse with cold water in a strainer will remove any traces of remaining saponin. Most of the quinoa consumed in the United States is used as a whole grain, such as rice or barley and is served separately or in casseroles or pilaf. Quinoa cooks in about 15 minutes, and can be served to you or your parrots in a variety of ways. Try cooking quinoa and serving it alongside your bird’s regular meal, or add it to chopped vegetables for an enriching and interesting variation on their usual offering. Quinoa is more widely available than ever before and can be found in most health food stores, ordered over the Internet and in specialty groceries stores. For a healthy diet option for your pet birds, consider trying quinoa.

Outdoor aviaries can be very beautiful, and the birds and parrots that live in them have the advantage of fresh air, natural light and access to rain water. They also have room to fly and exercise. Consider the following points before setting up your bird in an outdoor aviary.

Teach your bird to bring the object back to you. Keep throwing the ball toward your bird until it gets the idea that it is supposed to bring the ball back to you. When your bird finally does, say, “Great job” in a happy, excited tone of voice, and scratch it on the head. That alone should motivate your bird to bring the toy back to you next time you toss it. All games include a verbal command to say at the start of the game, which lets your bird know it’s game time. There is no reliable way to determine if your macaw is male or female by external physical examination. DNA testing is the least invasive of all the methods to determine the sex of a macaw. The other methods are chromosomal testing and surgical sexing. DNA testing only requires one of the following; a drop of blood, the shell of the egg the bird hatched from, or a few small feathers plucked from the bird’s chest. Chromosomal testing requires a large blood feather pulled from the wing or tail of the bird. Surgical sexing is an invasive procedure that requires anesthesia. The veterinarian makes a small incision into the bird’s abdomen and inserts an endoscope to visualize the bird’s sexual organs. Veterinarians can make mistakes if the bird is very young. However, the advantage of this procedure is that the veterinarian can immediately identify sexual defects and many other health issues. From small finches to large Amazon parrots with even larger personalities, birds can make wonderful pets. But before getting a new feathered friend, you need to do a little research first. That’s because some birds, like parakeets and canaries, are great for beginners, while others, like cockatoos and macaws, are better suited for experienced bird owners. We spoke to two bona fide bird experts Dr. Laurie Hess, DVM, DABVP (Avian Practice), owner of Veterinary Center for Birds & Exotics in Bedford Hills, New York, and Long Island Parrot Society’s former president Susan Chamberlain, to identify the best pet birds and learn a little about each one so you can find the right fit for your flock.

There is a vast range of parrot-family birds that are called conures, so it is almost impossible to generalize in regard to the differences between male and female birds. Within the Pyrrhura conures, such as the green-cheeked conures, black-capped conures and painted conures, I would say that they are pretty much all a delightful combination of “sugar and spice.” Pyrrhura conures are generally a curious bunch of little conures. Perhaps the males are a bit more into exploring their whole world, but I have known female conures that also go on dramatic searches into the great unknown. Both male and females Pyrrhura conures are busy-bodies that like to use their beak and tongue to touch everything and learn everything about what there are touching. This makes these little birds a bit “beaky,” but their need to check everything out with their beak is not aggressive. If the little pinches to your fingers are annoying, find a bird toy to stick in their beak instead of your fingers. A knotted leather strip usually works well for this purpose because it has texture that they usually like to check out. The best known group of conures is the Aratinga conures. There are just over 20 species of Aratinga conures, with a few of the best known being the blue-crowned conure, cherry-headed conure, sun conure, jenday conure and gold-capped conures. I have the most experience in working with blue-crowned conures and find the males and the female to be equally delightful. Sun conures are one of the most beautiful of all parrots with their bright yellow, orange and green colorations. I have met many sun conures and will make a generalization about those that I have worked with, but I know that there are definitely exceptions. The female sun conures I have known are generally sweet, very cuddly and quiet – yes, I said quiet! All of the female Aratinga conures I have known well are happy to hang on their favorite person’s shirt, usually inside with their heads popping out at the collar. Male Aratinga conures are more likely to be a bit territorial around their bird cages and their favorite people. I think the male sun conures generally give the sun conure such a reputation for being loud screamers but that seems to be tied to their intense need to protect their territory. Although sun conures are not know for talking, I would guess that the males are probably better talkers because they are usually more vocal, but I doubt if this is always true. There are other birds with great differences that are classed as conures, such as the Patagonian conures, slender-billed conures, Austral conures, and the amazing golden conure, that is endangered in the wild. Last year I had the opportunity to visit Nancy Speed at the P Patch in Mississippi. She has golden conures, Queens, as she calls them (because they are also known as Queen of Bavaria conures). She has a colony of about 100 golden conures in one building. Ear protection is needed to be able to stay in the building. The noise the each golden conure makes blends together to make an other-worldly sound that could be used as a soundtrack for a alien-invasion movie. Just about all conures have a reputation for noise making but I had never heard anything like this. People often state that Patagonian conures are a misplaced cockatoo species because they are so cuddly. I have generally found this to be true with both males and female Patagonian conures. One of my favorite birds of all time is my slender-billed conure, Twiggy. More than any other bird I have met or lived with, she is a happy conure. Her sounds are happy, her play is happy, and she greets her food bowl with happy sounds. In talking to others who are lucky enough to live with these unusual birds, the males seem to be the same way. As a generalization, I would state that in some conures, the males are more territorial and, therefore, a little bit more likely to be on guard for changes and intruders. This can make some males of some conure species more aggressive under certain situations. I would also make a generalization that the males tend to be more vocal, which can be positive in talking or negative in screaming. A knowledgeable caregiver can work with the screaming and channel it into talking or another more positive vocal trait. Again, as a generalization that can have many exceptions, female conures tend to be more affectionate and cuddly. My guess is that males can be just as affectionate if people work to develop that characteristic. All in all, if asked by someone if they should get a male or a female conure, I would quickly state that either can be a very rewarding companion.

Parrots are often called hookbills, which is an avicultural term based on the shape of the beak or bill. This distinguishes parrots from softbills and other birds, such as doves and finches. The function of the parrot beak is for climbing, as well as manipulating and crushing objects.

One of the first things a visitor asks you when you have a parrot in your home is, “Does it talk?” It seems that everyone is fascinated by the ability of parrots to mimic the language spoken by its people. Why wouldn’t they be? Our dogs and cats communicate with us, but birds are the only pets with the ability to do so in our own words. Many parrot lovers bring home a bouncing baby bird hoping that it learns to talk, but there are a lot of myths about how and why a parrot does or does not learn to speak our language. There is no hard and fast rule about how often a bird should bathe. Some birds seem to enjoy bathing once a week and look forward to bath-time. Although bathing is an important behavior and valuable for healthy feathers and skin, it is not vital for pet birds, as evidenced by the fact that some pet birds never bathe. I am not condoning not allowing birds to bathe. I do recommend regular bathing. Allow your birds to enjoy a bath from time to time, but don’t stress out if a bird doesn’t want to participate regularly. Bath-time should be a fun enrichment experience and not a negative one.
