Just like in people and other animals, there are many types of tumors that can occur in birds. Avian tumors can be of the spreading, aka malignant, variety or of the non-spreading, aka benign, type. They also can be external or internal. And depending on the avian species, some tumors may be more common than others. Here’s the good news: Ttumors in pet birds are relatively rare. For example, a 2023 study from Australia found the incidence of neoplasia, or the uncontrolled, abnormal growth of cells, in companion and aviary birds to be only 2.45 percent. The types of tumors that exotic veterinarians tend to see more frequently in birds include: Kidney or testicular tumors in parakeets Preen gland tumors, found in the special oil gland at the tail base in birds, normally used for coating their feathers Xanthomas and lipomas, also known as fatty tumors, typically found in the skin. They are benign tumors but can cause large growths. Liposarcomas, a rare type of cancer that can form in the fat cells Less commonly, avian veterinarians find cancer in: the sinuses oral cavity lungs air sacs liver spleen kidneys bones vascular and connective tissues ovaries/reproductive tract thyroid gland brain Lymphoma, or lymphosarcoma, a specific type of cancer originating in the lymphatic system and/or blood, can affect multiple organs, given the widespread nature of the lymphatics throughout the body. As a result of lymphoma, the liver is the most commonly affected organ, then the spleen and kidneys. Additionally, squamous cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer, can occur on a bird’s skin and beak but can also be found inside the mouth, esophagus and crop (the muscular pouch near the gullet). During our 20 years together, my African grey has taught me many things about life and living, and she has brought immense joy to my life. In turn, I have learned a lot, not only as an owner but as an avian veterinarian, on the care and housing these great parrots need. African greys have environmental and developmental needs that are often misunderstood by their owners. If left unaddressed, behavioral and physical problems can arise either early on or much later in life. These problems include aggression, excessive and unexpected fear, and feather chewing. Amazon parrots have a long and storied history as song masters, in part because of their colorful personalities. Diana Holloway, former president of The Amazona Society, said that Amazons enjoy showing off their talents and like to be the center of attention. “You usually see yellow-naped Amazons on TV singing. The audience always laughs, not just because of the talent, but also because of the bird itself. Amazons puff out their cheek feathers and sway, prance and head bob while showing off. They are true hams.” Her Amazon, Lola, loves to sing Barry Manilow’s “Cabana Song.” “She gets into singing, ‘Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl at the Copa, Copa Cabana’ at the top of her lungs, and then makes the song her own by interjecting all kinds of other phrases and operatic arias. It is hysterical.” She added that double-yellow-headed Amazons are known for their operatic voices. “They can run the scales like no other parrot.” Susanne Cochran of Colorado raises Amazons at the Avalon Aviary and believes that in addition to the double yellow-headed Amazon, the yellow-naped and blue-fronted Amazons are the best singers. “They love to be vocal; it is part of being a magnificent Amazon, and they know they are magnificent.” Cochran said that these parrots like to make up new songs that show off their creativity. “I think it is done more when they forget a part of a song or are at a loss for words.” Although Amazons are enthusiastic singers and can be quite loud, they can be taught to “whisper sing,” Cochran related. Her yellow-naped mother bird, Wolfie, sings soft “la-la-las” to her babies in the nest. Yvonne Kleine of New York has a yellow-naped Amazon, Perri, that greets her with a series of wolf whistles, jungle songs of her own composition and the occasional Amazonian Concerto. “We have this little ritual where she sings to me, and after a few bars, she stops, and I am supposed to fill in the missing musical parts. If she likes the melody, she joins in, if she doesn’t, she screeches “No! No! No!” and we start all over again. She never gets tired of doing this.” Perri also sings opera. She loves Gilbert and Sullivan. “She sings and dances to ‘We Sail the Ocean Blue,’ wiggling around and bobbing her head while fluttering her wings. Her version is so funny and fractured that there have been times I have laughed until tears flowed.” Diana Craven of California has three African greys, but her best talker (and songstress) is her yellow-crowned Amazon, Little Lulu. “She learned to turn on the radio by watching me move the switch from radio to tape. Now she moves the switch back to radio, says ‘Good girl’ and returns to her cage.” Little Lulu sings ‘Take Me Out to the Ballgame,’ which is very clear, all the way to ‘I don’t care if never get back.’ She loves to sing ‘crackerjack.’ She also sings ‘I Left My Heart in San Francisco,’ through to ‘the morning sun will chill the air.’ I think she misses a few words somewhere, but there’s no mistaking what she is singing. She sings herself to sleep very softly, making up her own words and melody, and sometimes she just hums.”,The Appeal Of The Cockatiel

When a bird works to assist in therapy or offer comfort or emotional support to an individual with a disability under the care of a trained medical professional, the bird is working as an “emotional support animal,” an “assistance animal,”or a “therapy animal.” Different legal rules apply to service animals, emotional support animals and pets. Parrots and some other species of birds are known to be extremely empathetic and tuned into the emotional environment around them. They can sense stress and tension, anger and distress in their owners, before these bubbling feelings break the surface. Such sensitivity can be harnessed and birds, like other species, can be trained to use these abilities to help individuals with psychological or emotional disabilities. In one famous case, a bi-polar man relied on his empathetic African grey parrot to intuit when a rage-like episode was coming on and encourage him to “calm down!” He carried her in a cage fitted with straps like a backpack so she could travel with him anywhere. She was trained to repeat soothing phrases and sounds to talk him down. Abused and injured parrots, harbored in refuges, exhibit uncertainty and mistrust of humans similar to the feelings of veterans experiencing post traumatic stress disorder. A number of unique programs run out of charitable aviaries draw on these shared experiences and emotions to help veterans and injured birds heal one another. Also, as handling birds demands focus and gentleness and interacting with them can bring about a sense of peace, many species of birds, from macaws to cockatiels, are used in therapy, prison rehabilitation programs, and in nursing homes.
